About John

Political: John Weston is the Member of Parliament for West Vancouver – Sunshine Coast – Sea to Sky Country. Elected in October 2008, he serves as a member of the Official Languages and Fisheries Standing Committees and as the first ever Government Liaison to the Canadian Persian and Iranian Community. He also served on the Public Accounts Committee. He continues to serve the people of the riding, passionately and effectively, in accordance with our values. He has assembled a great team of hard working staff and volunteers around him. John has worked closely with mayors and councillors in the riding he represents to highlight local priorities.
 
John has hosted several ministers, including Stockwell Day, Jason Kenney, James Moore, Jim Prentice, Lisa Raitt, Diane Ablonczy, and Gary Lunn who have visited the riding this year to hear firsthand the priorities of constituents and numerous town halls. As a result, significant federal investment has flowed to the West Vancouver – Sunshine Coast – Sea-to-Sky Country riding, focused on the needs of local communities. John has engaged in important international work representing Canadian commercial and human rights interests in Pakistan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Korea.
John is also a lawyer, father, husband and author. He is a nationally-recognized public speaker on constitutional issues, and his numerous writings on government, international law and ethics have been published in newspapers across Canada.
 Personal: John was born and raised in British Columbia. He was educated at Osgoode Hall Law School and Harvard. He is multilingual, and speaks English, Mandarin and French. John has completed his first book, “Jade Across the Kwai,’ a creative non-fiction account of his family’s experiences in WW II. 
Family: John lives with his wife Donna and their three young children, Shane, Jake, and Mei Mei, in West Vancouver.

 

Business: John has worked as a lawyer in Canada and in Taiwan, founding law firms in both countries. He is a founder of Pan Pacific Law Corporation and Access Law Group, two successful, community-oriented Vancouver law firms. In the 1980’s John acquired diplomatic experience as he helped to establish Canada’s trade office in Taiwan. As a student, he worked in public service for prominent British Columbians, such as Rafe Mair and the late Melvin Smith. He has also worked in Newfoundland and Alberta and in Quebec’s Department of Constitutional Affairs.

Community: John has served as a leader for the Beavers and Cubs, and as an assistant soccer coach in the West Vancouver community. He is the past Chair of Canadian Food for the Hungry International (an organization that delivers aid directly to starving people).
John has always fought for what is right. He will always stand up for his riding, for BC, and for all Canadians. He has fought in the courts for equality and individual liberties, and published numerous articles about justice and equality. John founded the Canadian Constitution Foundation to promote and uphold the rights of Canadians against governments that overreach the rights of individuals.
